Offset or digital?

As technology has evolved, so have we. We print any of the above — including large-format — using the two most common commercial methods:

Offset printing

Produces the highest-quality printed products and suits large runs of a few originals. Plates and wet ink give the technician the highest degree of colour control — more vibrant colours, clearer pictures and premium materials. With computer-to-plate technology it remains the most cost-effective method for consistently high-quality bulk jobs.

Digital printing

The quickest way to produce short runs, especially with many originals. Digital quality has come a long way and is now comparable to offset for most work, with faster turnaround and variable-data printing.

    Quotes

How long does it take to receive a custom quote?
It depends on the complexity of your request; the vast majority of estimates are done within 24 hours.
How long are your estimates valid for?
Estimates expire after 30 days, after which we will re-do the estimate.
How do I proceed after I receive an estimate?
Once you have reviewed the estimate, confirm it with us and share your print-ready files to begin production.
Can I just email you the information instead of using the form?
Yes — but we respond much faster to the form, which captures everything we need for the estimate.

    Printing questions

    What is offset printing?
A technique where the inked image is transferred (offset) from a plate to a rubber blanket and then to the printing surface. Combined with lithography, the image area takes ink while the non-printing area attracts a film of water and stays ink-free.
What are the advantages of offset printing?
Consistently sharp, clean images and type; works on paper, wood, cloth, metal, leather and plastic; cheaper per piece at high volume; and accurate Pantone reproduction, which digital methods only simulate.
    What are Pantone colours?
The Pantone Matching System (PMS) identifies print colours by a unique name or number, so colours stay the same from system to system and run to run.
What are the most common sizes for catalogues and booklets?
    5½″ × 8½″, 8½″ × 11″ and 11″ × 17″.
What are the most common sizes for brochures?
    8½″ × 11″, 8½″ × 14″ and 11″ × 17″.
Which is better for the environment: digital or offset?
Digital — it uses dry ink or toner with no VOCs and produces far less paper waste thanks to shorter set-up.
What paper options do you offer for leaflets and flyers?
Silk coated (115–350 gsm), gloss coated (115–350 gsm) and premium uncoated (100–350 gsm).
Can I print with PMS or other special inks?
Yes — although to reduce wash-ups and VOCs we prefer process inks.
    What is digital printing?
Printing in which data and images go directly from the computer onto paper.
What are the advantages of digital printing?
Lower per-unit cost on small runs once set-up is counted, faster turnaround, variable-data printing, more accurate proofing and less waste.
How big is the quality difference between offset and digital?
From negligible to significant. Photographs and text reproduce well on our high-end digital press; large solid areas of colour print much better offset.
    Which paper should I choose?
Offset presses print well on any paper. For digital we recommend ChorusArt and Astrolite 100PC.
I’m still not sure which method to choose.
Choose offset when quality is the main concern, volumes are high (more than 250 business cards or 1000 brochures), paper is thicker than 14 pt, or the finished size exceeds 12″ × 18″. Choose digital for turnarounds under 5 business days, low volumes, or variable data.
Can I choose a luxury paper for my leaflets and flyers?
Yes — we have a comprehensive selection of luxury papers; just state your preference.

    File questions

What file formats do you require?
Press-ready PDF is preferred; AI and EPS are also accepted.
    What are crop marks?
Printed lines indicating where the paper should be cut to produce the correct page size.
Do I have to draw crop marks manually?
No — any desktop publishing software creates them automatically when you export to PDF; just make sure the trim size equals your document size.
Do I have to impose my artwork myself?
No — all files are imposed automatically in our workflow.
    What is bleed?
Any element that touches the document border must extend past it, so it is still edge-to-edge after cutting. Please provide at least 3 mm bleed on all edges.
Should I convert my files to CMYK?
No — conversion from RGB to CMYK happens automatically in our workflow.
